In 2023, CERN and Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), a technological expert in membrane containment systems used to transport and store cryogenic liquids, started a collaboration to develop liquid hydrogen carriers. The ambition of this project is to provide a scalable technology to store and carry liquid hydrogen in ships and thus to contribute to the emerging green hydrogen supply chain by linking producers and consumers around the globe. Through this collaboration, CERN's competencies in materials, cryogenics and leak-tightness are supporting those working to bring innovative technical solutions with invaluable societal benefits and a very positive global environmental impact. CERN is providing its expertise and facilities to support GTT to develop material specifications, optimised designs and welding procedures compatible with the stringent safety and reliability requirements imposed by liquid hydrogen long-term storage. The design of the insulating containment system is one of the most challenging and innovative parts of the project.
